878 Vikings: Invasions of England
878 Vikings: Invasions of England may not be new or especially widespread, but it remains an underrated, noisy war game. Especially if, like us, you are hooked on The Last Kingdom, it has a very easy excuse to return to the table.

878 Vikings: Invasions of England is not a new game, and I do not get the sense that it has seen as much circulation as it deserves. We remembered it again during our The Last Kingdom obsession and, honestly, that atmosphere alone is enough to make me want it back on the table.
Here, dice are thrown by the bucketful. It is such a dice-fest that, after a point, talking about good or bad luck on the dice almost loses its meaning: you are not waiting for one crucial result, but for an entire storm of results.
In our latest game I switched sides and, instead of the English, took the Danes. In the first invasion I spread myself far too thin, and the English villagers properly put me on trial. The interaction was immediate and punishing: I tried to play it cleverly at a point in the game where I probably should have simply applied pressure, and the game did not forgive that hesitation.
Despite my defeat, I enjoyed it. It is honest, chaotic in its own way and, for me, remains an underrated game that deserves more attention.
