Axis & Allies: Battle of the Bulge

A gateway wargame that became the occasion for a very good family return to the Ardennes, with Sabaton in the background and plenty of appetite for a rematch. I do not ask much more than that.

My heir took an unexpected turn for the better: he left behind the childish Netflix dross and pointless YouTube videos and now devours anything military or historical, provided it is made for children or Americans. The Oversimplified series naturally holds a place of honour. So when he started asking me to play wargames, I found the perfect excuse to return to the Ardennes — and to continue his absolutely necessary indoctrination into the greatness of Sabaton.

Axis & Allies: Battle of the Bulge rests loosely on the broader Axis & Allies experience, without trying to load itself down with the full weight of a large, demanding wargame. Conflict is the heart of the experience: you choose your approach, test strategies, and try to emerge victorious from a confrontation that remains, more or less, historically sound.

On the table, the game works exactly as I want a gateway wargame to work: it gives you room to experiment and to watch your choices collide with your opponent’s, without requiring you to be initiated into the genre already. In our game, with “82nd All the Way” playing in the background and the youngster searching Google Translate for German sayings to improve his dice, the honest brawl had all the theatricality it needed.

I had a great time, but more importantly, the youngster is already eager for a rematch and wants to try new strategies. For a game that took us back to the Ardennes, gave us a lovely shared evening, and made us hungry for another play, what else could I realistically ask for? Great success!

  • Horizon Forbidden West: Seeds of Rebellion

Horizon Forbidden West: Seeds of Rebellion is a polished, substantial co-op campaign game that captures the videogame’s combat well. Its weak, filler-heavy narrative, however, may keep it from reaching the finish line despite the strong gameplay.

  • Abalone

The Abalone I remembered from the 1990s came back off the shelf and, to my pleasant surprise, immediately found a new opponent at home. It remains an honest blast from the past, even if it feels somewhat dated once nostalgia is removed from the equation.

  • Dune: War for Arrakis

An impressive asymmetric conflict game that sat on the shelf for a long time, but ultimately justified the moment it finally reached the table. It keeps its depth without becoming exhausting, and the Spacing Guild makes it even better.
