Connecting Flights
Connecting Flights has the right sales pitch for an airline-game enthusiast: auctions, route building and planes. It then flattens those promising ingredients into a wearying experience with very little at stake.

Auctions, route building, aircraft: Connecting Flights knew exactly which buttons to press. The production is good, and its core engine has a fair bit of satisfying burn to it. A pity there is so little game built on top of it.
At its centre are auctions, the growth of airline routes, and the management of planes. Those are usually ingredients for pressure, commitment, and that agreeable worry that another player is about to take the thing you need.
Auctions without consequences are merely cards changing hands.

Here, though, the design is so determined to prevent the snowball effect common to network games that it levels every meaningful distinction. Player interaction never develops into escalation; you can more or less sit out until the final round and still win. Auctions without consequences are merely cards changing hands.
The cooperative and solo modes improve matters somewhat, turning it into a fairly tough optimisation puzzle. It is handsome. It is also so flat that waiting for it to end can be the best strategy. Keep your distance.
