Conquest of Paradise
A light, thematic mini 4X from GMT that gets to the table without any drama. Its looseness, however, asks the players to police the leader themselves.

Partly for the joke, and partly because I was desperately craving some vitamin sea, I finally dusted off Conquest of Paradise, GMT’s mini 4X. It has a nice theme and, thankfully, it does not require dedicating an entire lifetime to learning it: within fifteen minutes, you are ready to play.
Mechanically, it is light and interesting—just enough to retain the 4X feel without becoming a chore. Teaching is quick and the game moves along comfortably, so you get to the point without wrestling with rules.
The issue is that this ease also makes it fairly loose. When someone gets ahead, the rest of the table more or less has to coordinate and cut them down; otherwise, the game does not seem to do it for them.
But still: as a quick, thematic, easily taught mini 4X, I thought it was perfectly fine. Just bring a group that will not be embarrassed to put the leader in check.
