Curious Cargo
Curious Cargo is a very tough network builder strictly for two players: only a step above filler in heft, but with enough brain burn to leave a mark.

Curious Cargo won me over precisely because it does not pretend to be something relaxed. It is a very tough network game for two players, a step above filler in size, but absolutely not filler in intensity. I loved it; my opponent, meanwhile, swore at me. A mark of quality? For me, let’s say it was.
Its rules are not difficult to grasp. The challenge is not untangling an opaque system, but deciding what to do once play begins and you have to build your network properly.
That is where the brain burn arrives: as a two-player network builder, it makes you think hard about every move and constantly reckon with the other person at the table. This is not calm, parallel construction; the contest has enough friction that your opponent will understand perfectly well why they are getting annoyed with you.
If you like games such as Pipeline, it is definitely worth a look. Fortunately, I know plenty of people: I can play it once with each of them, until they all swear at me in turn, and be perfectly happy.
