Era of Tribes
Era of Tribes is a hard-to-digest semi-civ game that left me with mixed feelings. I do not think it is a bad game, but it demands that you approach it the right way, or it becomes unforgiving.

Era of Tribes is one of those semi-civ games that does not immediately welcome you with open arms. It left me with mixed feelings, not because it is bad, but because the experience can become rather awkward and demanding.
There are mechanisms that require attention and a proper understanding of how they should be handled. It is not a game that easily forgives you for simply going in to “see what happens.”
If you do not play in a fairly specific way, the game can swallow you whole and leave you in the dark. That was the part that troubled me most: not difficulty in itself, but how punishing it becomes when you do not quickly find its rhythm.
I would like to try it again with all that in mind, because I can see that it is not a failed design. It simply needs more patience and a willingness to meet it on its own terms. For more detailed initial impressions, there is also the relevant write-up on BoardGameGeek.
