Feya's Swamp

Feya's Swamp is an enjoyable euro racing/area-control game about animal tribes trying to dominate a magical swamp. It offers clever choices and several paths to victory, even if its asymmetry did not feel perfectly balanced to me.

In Feya's Swamp, each player takes control of an animal tribe with the same ambitious goal: dominate the magical swamp they call home. It is a euro with racing and area-control elements, and that combination gives it a very enjoyable, competitive energy.

The heart of the game is trying to advance efficiently in the race while also building your tribe's presence and influence in the swamp. It is not enough to watch only your own progress: competing for space means that other players' choices constantly affect what remains available and what is worth pursuing.

What I particularly liked is that it does not seem to push you down one single correct line of play. There are multiple paths to victory and plenty of clever plays, so the contest between players is not simply about “running faster,” but also about when to invest in territorial dominance and when to adapt to your opponents' moves.

It reminded me a little of GMT's Conquest of Paradise in its general logic, but I found it far more complex and clearly more enjoyable. My only reservation is its asymmetric side: of the four tribes, two felt somewhat more... meh than the others. Even so, I had a very good time with it, and I think it is well worth a look.

  • Phoenix New Horizon

Phoenix New Horizon is a somewhat kinky worker-placement euro with plenty of engine building and slightly more interaction than the genre usually offers. It is not bad at all, but its turn-order mechanism left me annoyed, especially at four players.

  • Knee Deep in Hexes

A fair, zero-luck game for two that brings the tension of a classic resource-rush RTS to the table. Its rules are simple, but it is far more cunning than it first appears.

  • Lairs

Lairs is Battleship with dungeons, monsters, and loot: a clever game with an asymmetric idea and a wonderfully light mood. The base box works nicely for younger players, while any expansion opens it up for older ones too.
