Great Western Trail: New Zealand
As a fan of Pfister and the Great Western Trail series, I found New Zealand to be a substantial and distinctly different entry. It is probably the heaviest game in the series, even if it sits a notch below Argentina for me.

As a big Pfister fan, I have a soft spot for every Great Western Trail, and New Zealand is no exception. It is different enough to earn its place alongside the earlier entries, and it gave me the feeling that it may be the heaviest chapter in the series.
Here, the emphasis shifts more toward building your engine through the deck. The new mechanisms push your development in that direction, rather than leaning as clearly on the map and workforce.
That makes the game stand apart from the other GWT titles, but I also found the new ideas a little strange. The game’s progress runs more through how you build and use your deck, while the map and workers do not carry the same central weight I expected from the series.
Even so, we played it happily and I would gladly play it again. For me it sits one notch below Argentina, but it remains a top-tier game and fits perfectly comfortably beside the other two in a collection.
