Inca Empire

Inca Empire is an old game that recently found a place in my collection: a restrained route builder that is quick and pleasantly tight. Its real substance lies in the sun cards, which keep every player's actions under constant scrutiny.

An old game and a recent acquisition, Inca Empire gave me exactly what I wanted: a simple, modest route builder without unnecessary frills. We begin at the heart of the Aztec nation and gradually spread our empire, in an experience that does not weigh down either the table or the mind.

The core structure is clear: we build routes and try to expand our presence on the map. Turns move quickly, with very little downtime, so you are not left watching everyone else play while waiting for your turn to come around again.

Where it gets interesting is with the sun cards. They can affect players' actions positively or negatively, so simply having a plan is not enough: you need to watch how the situation around you might change. The interaction does not need to become loud or confrontational to matter; the cards are enough to make everyone's choices a little more careful.

The result is simple, clever, and tight, with enough catch-up mechanisms that the game does not feel decided too early. For me, it is just right as a light choice, whether to open or close a night full of eurogames.

  • Phoenix New Horizon

Phoenix New Horizon is a somewhat kinky worker-placement euro with plenty of engine building and slightly more interaction than the genre usually offers. It is not bad at all, but its turn-order mechanism left me annoyed, especially at four players.

  • Knee Deep in Hexes

A fair, zero-luck game for two that brings the tension of a classic resource-rush RTS to the table. Its rules are simple, but it is far more cunning than it first appears.

  • Lairs

Lairs is Battleship with dungeons, monsters, and loot: a clever game with an asymmetric idea and a wonderfully light mood. The base box works nicely for younger players, while any expansion opens it up for older ones too.
