Scorpius Freighter
Scorpius Freighter is the right next step when gateway games start to feel like too little. It has thought, choices, and almost no luck, without drowning you in rules.

I liked that AEG goes a little heavier here than what it has accustomed us to. Scorpius Freighter does not try to be a Lacerda or an Uwe, but it is an honest, satisfying game that makes me think without scaring me from the very first play.
Its core is a triple overlapping rondel, so every choice carries weight and affects my next moves. I am not simply placing a marker and hoping for the best: I have to look at where I am, what I am opening up, and what I am leaving for later.
The set collection adds even more directions and choices during the game. With almost zero luck, I feel that the result is mostly my own responsibility—so yes, I had better make a plan instead of pressing buttons at random.
And the best part? All of this comes with fairly easy rules. For me, this is exactly the ideal step up from gateway games toward the hobby's heavier drugs: enough depth to show you there is another whole world out there, but without needing a life jacket to get in.
