Undaunted: North Africa

I love the original Undaunted and War Chest, so I was eagerly awaiting North Africa and its vehicles. So far it has not disappointed me, though it has not blown me away either.

I love the original Undaunted and War Chest, so I was eagerly awaiting the second Undaunted, the one that brings vehicles to the table. My first impressions say it delivers on what it promises without disappointing me, but it has not yet reached the point where it makes me jump out of my chair.

The game unfolds through scenarios in which the two sides pursue their objectives. I have not moved on to the more complex ones yet, so my impression is mainly based on the first, more introductory games.

That is where the flow felt a little odd to me. In the early scenarios, we often end in a draw: one side can no longer do demolitions, while the other can no longer do control. The interaction is therefore very clear through these conflicting objectives, but at times it feels as though it stalls rather than leads to a decisive outcome.

Even so, I do not regret buying it at all. The vehicles and the promise of more complex scenarios are enough to keep me exploring; for now, though, I am not placing it above the games that made me love this series in the first place.

  • Phoenix New Horizon

Phoenix New Horizon is a somewhat kinky worker-placement euro with plenty of engine building and slightly more interaction than the genre usually offers. It is not bad at all, but its turn-order mechanism left me annoyed, especially at four players.

  • Knee Deep in Hexes

A fair, zero-luck game for two that brings the tension of a classic resource-rush RTS to the table. Its rules are simple, but it is far more cunning than it first appears.

  • Lairs

Lairs is Battleship with dungeons, monsters, and loot: a clever game with an asymmetric idea and a wonderfully light mood. The base box works nicely for younger players, while any expansion opens it up for older ones too.
