Weather Machine

Even once the rules are settled, Weather Machine is the Lacerda game I like least. Its running time is reasonable; its setup material and balance are not.

Playing time
150 min

With the rules finally settled and the game being played correctly, Weather Machine came in at a reasonable two hours and ten minutes. That is the bare minimum one expects from such a substantial box.

The game begins with the setup cards, or at least it is meant to. We tried to save time by using them and instead lost it: nearly half were wrong, or simply could not be played.

At four players, it is not merely tight; it is tight in the bad way.

At four players, it is not merely tight; it is tight in the bad way. An opening that spends a gov subsidy on a benefit which hands out another gov subsidy without a cog is plainly unbalanced; it does not guarantee a win, but it does not need to in order to spoil the game.

This is comfortably the Lacerda game I like least, and the table agreed. In a game with a $160 retail price, misprinted cards are not a small blemish; they are embarrassing.

  • Review Stupor Mundi

Stupor Mundi wears the full German-euro uniform and leaves much the same aftertaste: dry, busy, and oddly hard to recall. It is not unpleasant; it simply gives little reason to come back for another serving.

Rock Hard: 1977 is handsomely produced and reasonably committed to its theme, but beneath the polish sits a bland push-your-luck exercise that leaves chance doing the heavy lifting.

  • Review Stress Botics

Stress Botics conceals an interesting economic game beneath layers of rules, exceptions, and mechanical clutter. Its hand management deserves attention; nearly everything around it seems determined to punish that attention.
