Aldebaran Duel
Aldebaran Duel is a tight, quick two-player tableau builder that fits perfectly into an after-work session. It does not reinvent the wheel, but its drafting has depth and provides just enough reason for some good-natured swearing.

On the Gιάfka’s stealth Tuesdays, in that 5–7 slot after work, I have ended up putting Aldebaran Duel on the table often. It is one of those satisfying two-player games that plays quickly without feeling like you merely killed time. And, yes, I am also drawn in by the fact that it comes from the beloved designer behind Prague, Messina, and Underwater Cities.
At its core, it is a tableau builder with drafting. Each round, we look at a shared offer and choose up to two cards. Those cards either go into our tableau or are burned to pay for other cards. There is nothing revolutionary about the idea, but the economy of “do I keep this, or turn it into payment?” keeps the decisions tight.
The interaction comes precisely because the offer is shared. Once we start understanding what the other player is after, drafting stops being quiet personal optimization and becomes counter-drafting: I take something not only because I want it, but because I do not want you to have it. That is where the considerable swearing appears, in exactly the right way for an hour-long two-player game.
Aldebaran Duel is not groundbreaking, and it does not pretend to be. It is, however, enjoyable, quick, and plenty deep as you discover it: satisfying, roughly hour-long karate, ideal for fitting between work and the rest of Tuesday.
