Black Rose Wars
Black Rose Wars is a substantial, carefully presented game with respectable miniatures and a pleasing mix of strategy and gleeful aggression. It is not, however, the Mage Wars successor one might expect.

As someone with a real fondness for Mage Wars, I came to Black Rose Wars carrying rather more expectation than is healthy. The production wins you over straight away: proper miniatures, plenty in the box, and that agreeable sense that the game has weight not merely on the shelf but on the evening laid out before you.
At heart, it asks you to pair strategy with a willingness to be unpleasant in the right direction. A plan alone is not enough; you must keep it alive while the other players bring their own brand of rough play to the table.

Interaction is not garnish here but part of the meal. There is enough balance that the clashes do not feel arbitrary, and enough bite that a Tuesday after work can briefly become proper theatre.
The important thing is to arrive with the right expectation: this is not really Mage Wars, but something much closer to Wiz-Wars. That does not make it the lesser game; it makes it a different, generous, quietly excellent choice for anyone who likes strategy with a little genuine disorder.
