Colonial Twilight: The French-Algerian War, 1954-62

On my third play, Colonial Twilight remained every bit as tense as I remembered, even though my opponent’s lack of experience made the match somewhat one-sided. As serious two-player GMT games go, I recommend it without hesitation.

My third game of Colonial Twilight: The French-Algerian War, 1954-62 did not change my impression at all: I recommend it unreservedly. This particular match was somewhat one-sided, since my opponent was trying games of this kind for the first time, but it was hardly short on excitement.

The second Propaganda round, in particular, almost cost me the game: I avoided losing by a single point. Such a tiny margin is enough to remind me just how much tension this game can produce.

The fact that this was only my third play and it still carried that much suspense says a lot. Even when the two sides are not equally experienced, the game can keep the whole table alert.

And, staying in the mood for serious two-player GMT games, a modern Labyrinth also made its way onto the table. Not a bad way to spend an evening at all.

  • Horizon Forbidden West: Seeds of Rebellion

Horizon Forbidden West: Seeds of Rebellion is a polished, substantial co-op campaign game that captures the videogame’s combat well. Its weak, filler-heavy narrative, however, may keep it from reaching the finish line despite the strong gameplay.

  • Abalone

The Abalone I remembered from the 1990s came back off the shelf and, to my pleasant surprise, immediately found a new opponent at home. It remains an honest blast from the past, even if it feels somewhat dated once nostalgia is removed from the equation.

  • Dune: War for Arrakis

An impressive asymmetric conflict game that sat on the shelf for a long time, but ultimately justified the moment it finally reached the table. It keeps its depth without becoming exhausting, and the Spacing Guild makes it even better.
