Concordia: Gallia / Corsica

Concordia has become our game of the year, somewhat belatedly but deservedly. Gallia delivers a tight, strong game that works wonderfully as a warm-up too.

Concordia has become our game of the year. Yes, yes, we remembered it only now — what can you do, sometimes a few gems slip past us. Nobody is perfect.

Gallia was exactly what we needed to start the evening: a lovely game, ideal for warming up, without ever feeling slight or unimportant.

Gallia’s narrow map pushes the game towards the ports from the very beginning. That somewhat forced opening immediately gives the game direction and lets the map develop a character of its own.

With five players, the pressure is exactly right. Space gets tight, choices gain weight, and the race stays alive without becoming suffocating.

The result was a strong game, with only a small gap between the leaders. One of those contests that leaves you looking at the map after it ends and thinking you want another one straight away.

  • Horizon Forbidden West: Seeds of Rebellion

Horizon Forbidden West: Seeds of Rebellion is a polished, substantial co-op campaign game that captures the videogame’s combat well. Its weak, filler-heavy narrative, however, may keep it from reaching the finish line despite the strong gameplay.

  • Abalone

The Abalone I remembered from the 1990s came back off the shelf and, to my pleasant surprise, immediately found a new opponent at home. It remains an honest blast from the past, even if it feels somewhat dated once nostalgia is removed from the equation.

  • Dune: War for Arrakis

An impressive asymmetric conflict game that sat on the shelf for a long time, but ultimately justified the moment it finally reached the table. It keeps its depth without becoming exhausting, and the Spacing Guild makes it even better.
