Foothills

Foothills is a small, polished euro for two, with the feel of a mini Snowdonia. For anyone who loves compact two-player titles, I consider it a very easy blind buy.

Foothills immediately gave me the feeling of a mini Snowdonia for two players: a particularly interesting little gem, fitting neatly into that corner of compact euro experiences. If you enjoy games such as Cave2Cave or Inland Port, this is one of those cases where I would hardly hesitate over a blind buy.

Do not go in expecting Fields of Arle in pocket-sized packaging, though. It does not have that scale or ambition. Instead, it is a tight euro for two that stands very well as its own, smaller proposition.

What I like most is that it stays competitive without letting luck take charge. In roughly 45 minutes, it offers that clean euro feeling where the contest with the player across from you carries weight.

And the package becomes even more appealing because its price is fair. For fans of small, strictly two-player euros, Foothills is a very lovely addition to the shelf—and a game that deserves to get onto the table quickly.

  • Horizon Forbidden West: Seeds of Rebellion

Horizon Forbidden West: Seeds of Rebellion is a polished, substantial co-op campaign game that captures the videogame’s combat well. Its weak, filler-heavy narrative, however, may keep it from reaching the finish line despite the strong gameplay.

  • Abalone

The Abalone I remembered from the 1990s came back off the shelf and, to my pleasant surprise, immediately found a new opponent at home. It remains an honest blast from the past, even if it feels somewhat dated once nostalgia is removed from the equation.

  • Dune: War for Arrakis

An impressive asymmetric conflict game that sat on the shelf for a long time, but ultimately justified the moment it finally reached the table. It keeps its depth without becoming exhausting, and the Spacing Guild makes it even better.
