Import / Export

Import / Export takes the familiar lead/follow core of Glory to Rome and Eminent Domain and moves it into an economic theme, with changes that seem especially helpful at a full table.

At its core, Import / Export is a lightly improved version of the lead/follow engine I know from Glory to Rome and Eminent Domain, dressed in an economic theme. Its graphic design strains it a little, but beyond that it knows exactly what it wants to be.

The changes to the engine do not overturn it, but they felt meaningful where it counts. They retain the familiar core while adapting it so that the game holds up better as more players are added.

Import / Export ran very nicely in multiplayer in particular. I do not readily choose Eminent Domain with five players, whereas here the roughly similar logic seemed much more comfortable at that kind of table.

It is not a game that will hide its lineage, and its appearance does not help it as much as I would like. Even so, the session very clearly left me wanting to give it more plays.

For the end, we saved Mistborn: House War.

  • The Old King's Crown

The Old King's Crown is a tough but fair asymmetric card game that needs a group willing to learn its peculiarities. Once the early learning games are out of the way, I found in it much of what I wanted Arcs to give me.

  • Forestry

Forestry is a tight resource-management euro that, despite my reservations about its “best with 2” reputation, worked wonderfully with four players. Its diverging paths to victory and crushing endgame make it far more interesting than I expected.

  • Ayar: Children of the Sun

Ayar: Children of the Sun is a euro that dares to tighten up rather than open out as the game progresses. With an original tableau-building grid and meaningful indirect interaction, it asks for more than one play before it reveals what it can do.
