Lowlands

I played two more games of Lowlands, this time with different groups, on an evening when the table had already seen plenty of brawling. I did not have a bad time, but after four games in total, fatigue and boredom were already beginning to show.

I played two more games of Lowlands, with different people this time. The truth is that, after so much fighting had already happened at the table, I had no desire whatsoever to open another rulebook in search of something fresher. So Lowlands was the easy, readily available choice for the moment.

Mechanically, I do not have any great revelation to add after these games. The game worked well enough for us to sit down and play it, without leaving me feeling that something was throwing me out of the flow.

Still, its mechanisms were not what made me want to come back. After four games in total, I was already starting to feel that I had had my fill of what it offers, and that repetition was tiring me out.

I will not say that I had a bad time; quite the opposite, the groups were different and the games went along perfectly well. I simply did not feel any urge to put it back on the table soon. For me, Lowlands is a pleasant option for the moment, but not a game that held my interest beyond those first few visits.

  • Horizon Forbidden West: Seeds of Rebellion

Horizon Forbidden West: Seeds of Rebellion is a polished, substantial co-op campaign game that captures the videogame’s combat well. Its weak, filler-heavy narrative, however, may keep it from reaching the finish line despite the strong gameplay.

  • Abalone

The Abalone I remembered from the 1990s came back off the shelf and, to my pleasant surprise, immediately found a new opponent at home. It remains an honest blast from the past, even if it feels somewhat dated once nostalgia is removed from the equation.

  • Dune: War for Arrakis

An impressive asymmetric conflict game that sat on the shelf for a long time, but ultimately justified the moment it finally reached the table. It keeps its depth without becoming exhausting, and the Spacing Guild makes it even better.
