Snowdonia: Deluxe Master Set

Snowdonia: Deluxe Master Set is a brisk, old-school Euro with a huge range of scenarios to keep it fresh. It shows its age in places, but the sheer amount gathered here makes it outstanding value.

Snowdonia feels like the colleague who has been doing the job forever and sees no need to make a song and dance about it. This is worker placement from an older school: quick, tidy, and carrying a little of its age in plain view. That is not a flaw it needs to apologise for.

The Deluxe Master Set earns its keep through its enormous spread of scenarios. They are not padding for the box; each asks for a different route to success, so the game changes the way you approach it. On a tired Tuesday after work, that matters. You can sit down for a brisk Euro without feeling as though you are clocking into the same shift again.

There are dated edges, certainly, but this edition gives Snowdonia an almost bottomless reason to return. For the material and the variety of games it contains, it is remarkable value — quietly excellent.

Cold War: CIA vs KGB is not the last word in games about its subject. But for a child trying to understand a war with no famous battlefield attached, it is a gentle and useful place to begin.
