The Gallerist

It feels good to be back with The Gallerist, which remains, for me, Vital’s most cohesive game. And no, you do not need to set aside four hours of your life for it.

Feels good to be back. And I’m returning with The Gallerist, a game that, honestly, we’ve already said plenty about: for me, it is easily Vital’s most cohesive game.

I’m not going to take it apart piece by piece again. What matters is that everything sits together in a way that makes it feel complete and well put together, without losing its character.

And, dear pimple-faced reader who may be reading this and already panicking, the game did not last four hours. Including setup, we clocked in at 1 hour and 32 minutes.

So yes: The Gallerist remains a very cohesive choice, and one that is much easier to get onto the table than you might imagine.

  • Horizon Forbidden West: Seeds of Rebellion

Horizon Forbidden West: Seeds of Rebellion is a polished, substantial co-op campaign game that captures the videogame’s combat well. Its weak, filler-heavy narrative, however, may keep it from reaching the finish line despite the strong gameplay.

  • Abalone

The Abalone I remembered from the 1990s came back off the shelf and, to my pleasant surprise, immediately found a new opponent at home. It remains an honest blast from the past, even if it feels somewhat dated once nostalgia is removed from the equation.

  • Dune: War for Arrakis

An impressive asymmetric conflict game that sat on the shelf for a long time, but ultimately justified the moment it finally reached the table. It keeps its depth without becoming exhausting, and the Spacing Guild makes it even better.
