Town Builder: Coevorden

Town Builder: Coevorden is a simple, comfortable game in the vein of Villagers, with excellent production and a relaxed flow. It does nothing startling, but it is consistently pleasant as a filler.

Town Builder: Coevorden is one of those games I am happy to see on the table: it has superb production and an overall polished presence, without trying to sell itself as something heavier than it is. It gave me the feeling of a comfortable game in the Villagers range.

Its rules are easy and relaxed, so you get into the game quickly without having to carry complicated procedures around in your head. It is the kind of game that can be explained and played without any fuss.

The gameplay stays relaxed yet interesting, and the important thing is that it works equally nicely with two, three, or four players. I did not find any huge surprise or anything that lifts it into the stratosphere, but neither did I find anything unpleasant that put me off.

In the end, I see it as a very good filler: a pleasant choice while we are waiting for the fourth person in the group before opening up the more complex euro offerings.

  • Horizon Forbidden West: Seeds of Rebellion

Horizon Forbidden West: Seeds of Rebellion is a polished, substantial co-op campaign game that captures the videogame’s combat well. Its weak, filler-heavy narrative, however, may keep it from reaching the finish line despite the strong gameplay.

  • Abalone

The Abalone I remembered from the 1990s came back off the shelf and, to my pleasant surprise, immediately found a new opponent at home. It remains an honest blast from the past, even if it feels somewhat dated once nostalgia is removed from the equation.

  • Dune: War for Arrakis

An impressive asymmetric conflict game that sat on the shelf for a long time, but ultimately justified the moment it finally reached the table. It keeps its depth without becoming exhausting, and the Spacing Guild makes it even better.
