Review

Unfair

Unfair left me with a very positive impression over the two games I managed to play. It is relaxed and enjoyable, but do not let its simplicity fool you: there is plenty of fighting in it.

I explained it simply and rushed off because I was late, but I had already played two games the previous day and Unfair had left me with very positive impressions. It is one of those simple little games that you can pick up easily, without that meaning it is harmless.

At its core, you work with the “engines” each deck brings. In the first few games, the appeal lies precisely in seeing how each one works and how you build up your own side, without having to approach it as something heavy or exhausting.

But that is also where the take-that comes in. TheM1ke is right: there is plenty of it, and proper blows can be dealt. In one round, the whole table can turn on you and batter you, so I probably prefer it with two or three players rather than more.

Despite the hits, Unfair remains pleasant and very relaxed to play, especially while you are still discovering the decks. After explaining it, I carried on with Ioannis Prodromos and the Swiss guy at the Original Temple for a modest game of Wallace’s latest work.

  • Phoenix New Horizon

Phoenix New Horizon is a somewhat kinky worker-placement euro with plenty of engine building and slightly more interaction than the genre usually offers. It is not bad at all, but its turn-order mechanism left me annoyed, especially at four players.

  • Knee Deep in Hexes

A fair, zero-luck game for two that brings the tension of a classic resource-rush RTS to the table. Its rules are simple, but it is far more cunning than it first appears.

  • Lairs

Lairs is Battleship with dungeons, monsters, and loot: a clever game with an asymmetric idea and a wonderfully light mood. The base box works nicely for younger players, while any expansion opens it up for older ones too.
