Empires: Age of Discovery
Empires: Age of Discovery remains a solid game for six, especially when everyone around the table already knows it. This time, with clearer heads, the session was noticeably more competitive and once again came down to the details.

Empires: Age of Discovery is one of those games that, when everybody at the table already knows it, is easy to put down as a dependable choice for six. We had played it before, picked the different nations again, and slipped straight into the mood.
In terms of play, the main difference this time was the group’s attitude. We were not just sitting down to pass the time: there was more thought behind our choices, and that made the game far more competitive than it usually is.
And the result was, once again, a close game. I do not have some new angle on the mechanisms to dissect here; it simply confirmed that, with six players paying closer attention to what they are doing, the game can produce a tighter and more interesting contest.
Afterwards, once we were down to five, the mood deliberately shifted toward relaxing and trolling around. The original note stops just as we were setting up the next game, but Empires had already done its job as the honest, familiar choice of the evening.
