Lisboa

After two honest plays in one week, Lisboa finally showed me that beneath its initial appearance of a point-salad there is a real flow and real strategy. It demands familiarity, but I can see why many consider it Lacerda’s best.

I gave Lisboa two honest plays within seven days, mostly to see whether it would become clearer in my head. And yes: after the first impression that too much is happening at once and points are coming from everywhere, the game started to come together.

It is not merely a random point-salad. There is a flow to what you do, and as you become more familiar with it, you start to see why one choice now affects what you will be able to build later.

And this is not just about one obvious route. Lisboa seems able to support strategy—probably more than one kind—as long as you have played enough that you are no longer busy decoding everything while it happens.

That is why I completely understand why quite a few people consider it Lacerda’s best. It is not a game you pick up and immediately grasp; it needs plays for familiarity. But once that phase is over, it makes much more sense than it initially lets on.

  • Phoenix New Horizon

Phoenix New Horizon is a somewhat kinky worker-placement euro with plenty of engine building and slightly more interaction than the genre usually offers. It is not bad at all, but its turn-order mechanism left me annoyed, especially at four players.

  • Knee Deep in Hexes

A fair, zero-luck game for two that brings the tension of a classic resource-rush RTS to the table. Its rules are simple, but it is far more cunning than it first appears.

  • Lairs

Lairs is Battleship with dungeons, monsters, and loot: a clever game with an asymmetric idea and a wonderfully light mood. The base box works nicely for younger players, while any expansion opens it up for older ones too.
