Thesauros

If you’re not playing anyway, why not go fishing? A game that slipped away from the temple’s procurement department, but ended up in the collection of the other cardboard collector in the group, who, together with the now-viral little rules-explanation hand, proceeded to serve us a seafood menu. Basically, Thesauros is a resource management/worker placement euro, with strong racing elements. It would be a very simple and mediocre game if it didn’t have the peculiarity that you have to do fairly complex financial management of your company and draw up a budget for 3 rounds ahead each time. A nice little trick to add some complexity and a hard tool if you want to play aggressively, exploit the turn order and «bury» (as TheM1ke says) people. This may also be the game’s main negative: it can get quite harsh and competitive, moving quite far away from the feel-good euro logic. I would also say that it is probably better with three players; with four it is particularly demanding. Still, it was a pleasant and interesting experience, honestly thematic, and one of those games that gave grounds for further discussion of strategies after the end of the game. Good stuff.

  • Review The Bell of Treason: 1938 Munich Crisis in Czechoslovakia

So far, GMT’s lunch time games have not particularly grabbed me. Both Fort Sumpter and Red Flag Over Paris were, generously speaking, mediocre and boring. Czechoslovakia is a notch above, it somewhat resembles the considerably better Crisis:1914, which has similar mechanisms, but still no...
